The history of Fairmont State College is part and parcel of the history of public education in West Virginia. Founded as a private institution in 1865 and dedicated to educating teachers. Fairmont State University became a public college in Fairmont, West Virginia when the university was established as the West Virginia Normal School a few years later.

Then on April 7, 2004 Fairmont State College’s name changed to Fairmont State University. Today, Fairmont State University and Fairmont State Community & Technical College, serve the Upper Monongahela Valley, the state of West Virginia and the larger mid-Atlantic region as a resource for lifelong learning and career enhancement.
